Artist of the Year 2008

Who will be the next artist of the year?

The person who garners the most points from January 2008 through November 2008 by participating in monthly meeting competitions and in CAA shows, along with earning points for a variety of awards, will become the next "CAA Artist of the Year".  The final tally will occur in December and the new winner will be announced at the December Holiday Potluck Party and End of the Year Extravaganza.

Participation is the key, so make sure to participate in the monthly competitions, enter as many pieces as you can in the competitive shows and you just might win.  It doesn't automatically go to a person who has won Best of Show, or 1st Place.  It can be won by artists who consistently participate in the shows and monthly competitions.

For more information about the way artist of the year is tabulated see the information below.  You will also find information about our 2006-2007 winners below.  It was a tie between Mary Novak and Al Varela and their AOY show was held from mid March to mid April 2008.

Artist(s) of the Year 2006-2007

2006-2007  It was a tie!  Mary Z. Novak and Alberto Varela

The gallery was filled with the work of both Mary and Al.  The opening reception took place on Saturday March 15, 2008.

Mary Z. Novak

Mary’s realistic oil paintings have been exhibited with the Corona Art Association and in Norco for several decades.  She will be exhibiting in the premier artist category for the tenth time at the Norco Western Show this year.  Mary’s technical skills enable her to paint a wide range of subjects including figurative and portraits, landscapes, still life, Western themes and fantasy scenes.  Mary has been the CAA Artist of the Year in several previous years.  She currently serves on the CAA board, assists with the Norco Western Art Show and is active in other community groups.

Alberto Varela

Al has focused his current efforts in photography and has accumulated a diverse body of work that includes monotype printmaking, pastels, and paintings.  He enjoys a variety of styles, media and subject matter.  He recently won awards for a series of photographs he took while traveling in Mexico.  This is the first time that Al has been named an Artist of the Year at the Corona Art Association.

Both Mary and Al are well known within the Corona-Norco community and beyond.  They exhibit their art work in Southern California and are active in numerous community functions in addition to being active members of the Corona Art Association.  Mary serves as a member of the Corona City Arts Advisory Committee and Al was one of the grand marshals for the Corona Cinco De Mayo parade 2007.  Al is also active in the Riverside and Pomona arts communities.

How to Become Artist of the Year

The points for 2008 Artist of the Year are already starting to add up so start entering events soon.  The competition is still wide open and any one of our members could win the event if they participate in the remaining events this season--the competitive shows, the themed and rotating shows and the monthly meeting competitions.

Participation is the most important factor for winning Artist of the Year.  Yes, it’s true. participation is the key.

The Artist of the Year Award was developed with the intent of rewarding artists who are producing and exhibiting artwork as part of their participation and support for the CAA and its events.  It recognizes not only the artwork produced, but also the active support and participation in the CAA by member artists.  That’s why the Artist of the Year wins not only recognition on a plaque and a certificate, but also the opportunity to install a solo show the following year with full publicity and support from the CAA.

Each year it is a wide open competition that anyone could win, especially if artists enter each of the monthly meeting competitions that are judged by our demonstrators, as well as entering our competitive shows.  Prize winners gain extra points, but the most important factor is consistency in participation.  You receive points for each piece that you enter in a competitive show and in the monthly competition up to the maximum number of entries allowed.

As an example, this past year ended in a tie with several artists close behind the winners.  If any number of artists had entered every show and each monthly competition they may have gained enough points to have inched ahead, even if they had not won a place award in a competitive show.

Mark the monthly meeting and art show dates on your calendar and make that extra effort to attend every single meeting and show take-in date.  You may bring up to two pieces each month for the monthly meeting competition.  As Woody Allen once said, “Eighty percent of success is showing up.”

Here are the details of how the AOY points are awarded and scores tabulated.  A point system, based both on awards received and on participation in events during the CAA calendar year, provides the guidance for distributing points as follows:

Monthly Meeting Competitions

At each monthly meeting from January through November (excluding June, July and August) an artist receives 1 point for each entry up to a maximum of two per artist per month for work entered at the regular monthly meetings.  Additional points are given to place winners as follows:  3 points for First, 2 points for Second, and 1 point for Third.  Place winners are determined by the selection of the monthly meeting demonstrator.

Show Competitions

Eligible works include any pieces which have not previously won Best of Show or First Place in any previous CAA show competition.

Two points per entry are awarded for each entry to the allowable limit for participation for each show (current limit is 3).  Additional points are awarded to place holder winners as determined by the show judge.  Best of Show 9 points, First Place 7 points, Second Place 5 points, First Place 3 points, and all Honorable Mention winners receive 1 point.  Popular Choice and any special bonus or sponsorship awards determined by local businesses or other local entities are awarded 5 points each.

Currently CAA hosts the following competitive shows:

  •   Founder’s Day Show in Feb.

  •   Spring Fling Show in April

  •   Dominick Frascella Show in Nov.

Any artist having won the AOY award in three consecutive years may continue to participate in monthly competitions and CAA shows and exhibits, but will be ineligible to receive the AOY Award again until one full year has elapsed after their third successive win.
